WOW! National Letter Carriers Food Pick Up Day Delivers BIG!
The Walnut Street Community Ministry received 1,500 pounds of food picked up at Louisville homes on May 10 by letter carriers assigned to the Shively Post Office. Pictured are ladies from UAW Local 862 who helped organize the food. Thanks to Rod Barnett, Muhammad Alfraiji, and Rick Price for bringing all that food to the Community Ministry. This food will supplement Dare to Care products available to our neighbors. Dare to Care and the Community Ministry welcomes your food donations throughout the year.
Community Ministry Partners with
Old Louisville Farmer’s Market
The Old Louisville Farmer’s Market, located at South 3rd Street and West Ormsby Avenue, will now be partnering with the Community Ministry. The Farmer’s Market will donate any surplus produce at the close of each market to the Community Ministry for our neighbors.
Neighbors are invited to visit the Farmer’s Market on the dates listed. Individuals receiving SNAP benefits may spend food stamps at the market. Additionally the Farmer’s Market will double the amount of your purchase up to $20. That’s a great way to extend the value of food stamps while purchasing fresh fruits and vegetable straight from the garden.
Friendship International Celebrates 50th Year Anniversary
Friendship International is celebrating its 50th anniversary during 2025. The group, currently led by Donna Martin, has been meeting throughout the 50 years at Walnut Street Baptist Church.
Friendship International is a ministry that has reached out to the International Communities in Louisville for 50 years. The ministries provided are designed to help internationals discover new friendships, improve conversational English, develop creative skills, learn about American culture, increase world awareness, and most importantly. . . be introduced to Jesus Christ.
The group meets each Wednesday, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, throughout the school year. All are welcome to attend to engage in Bible and language studies as well as sewing and crafts.
Photographs shown here picture a recent celebration of the 50th anniversary. Donna Martin, leader of the group, is pictured with Lei Xiao, wife of the Pastor of the Walnut Street Baptist Church Chinese congregation.
Donate to Community Ministry While Buying Groceries at Kroger
Did you know you can donate to the Community Ministry when you buy your groceries? If you shop for groceries at Kroger, here’s a way to help at no cost to you. To do this, set up a digital account using your Kroger Card by going to kroger.com. Sign in to your account and scroll to the bottom of the page. Under the COMMUNITY column, click Kroger Community Rewards. That link will take you to the directions to set up Kroger Rewards on your account. When prompted for the organization, search for Walnut Street Baptist Church CSM/IRP or the code VP528. Select and save. When you shop, the Walnut Street name will appear at the bottom of your receipt. The Community Ministry quarterly receives a check of a percentage of everything that you buy. You can also call customer service (1-800-576-4377) to set up your account. For assistance or additional information, contact Janet Pearson.

May Assistance Report
The number of people living in food insecure households in the United States grew drastically in 2024. In the U.S. 1 in 7 people, including 1 in 5 children live in food insecure households. The Community Ministry statistics for the month of May are local proof of that national trend. During May, the WSBC Community Ministries provided food for 918 individuals. This number, a direct example of the food insecurity and need in our community, is the second highest number of individuals ever served by the ministry in one month. We also provided produce for 533 individuals, personal care hygiene and/or household items for 150 homes, and clothing for 232 individuals (including 106 new clients). The Infant Resource Mission provided necessities for 77 babies and toddlers.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
